Turn your smile on

If you're not 'out driving on slow hand road,' as they say in the song, or staying home to 'play games I don't know,' as THAT song also says, you might just be trying to launch yourself into the month of Januvictus (from the romans) in your own unique way.

I personally like to flow into it as I do everything, drifting. Not much to brag about but it works for me.

Here's this next thing:
Do you tweet? Do you facebook? Are you a flickr-er? What about that other thing business people use for networking, that online whachamacallit? Well I'm able to just barely keep up with all this stuff. I actually tweeted yesterday for the second time in two years.

Anyways, I think it's a generational thing. You know what I mean? Kids today have gadgets coming out of every ear and pocket and in every hand. Now what about the older ones. Take for instance our parents. For the most part, they want nothing to do with all this technology. They can barely turn the television set on. Okay. But their parents were unimpressed with all the newfangled gadgets of their middle age. "Shut that damn panasonic portable radio off, it's too loud."

We all go to a comfort level that we can deal with and understand and that's good enuff for us.

Observation: don't you want (need) to get away from it now and then? I do. I'm happy not to turn my computer on for a whole weekend and couldn't care less if my cell phone rings or not. (I'd rather it not.) I don't want an i anything and I don't want to text or for that matter email either. I like talking to people I meet (I talk to anybody) and they like talking.

I've found that almost everybody wants to say "hi" and laugh about something and just wish each other well. We are sociable creatures. Our social need is stitched into our souls. No amount of faceless gadgetry is going to sate our need to say hi face-to-face and to smile and tell a joke. It's what we do.

And when I run across a person who doesn't I'm always a little saddened for them and what they are missing. The world is a big interesting place and people make it so.

At Fresh Farms recently I went to purchase a couple my favorite ruby red giant grapefruit and got in line behind a young couple who had manuevered a shopping cart exploding with purchase items up to the checkout station. They immediately noticed me behind them and asked if I would like to go in front of them. I didn't want to do that but they insisted and joked at how slow they were. We joked back and forth and I did go in front. This was quite nice and I thanked them and went to the clerk to pay. I smiled and told the clerk maybe she'll have to give them at least 10 percent off for being such nice folks and they were laughing and joking with me. All the while this checkout person never looked up, never smiled, never said a word to me or them. I noticed she had a cell phone sticking out of her hand and a headset around her neck (but off) and I felt kinda sad for this kid-to be that detached to the world right around her. (But so connected via gadgetry!!!)

What I'm trying to say in this long-winded way is this: gadgets are great but when the power fails don't you immediately seek out people to laugh and joke with and to check on their well-being? Again, we go to our comfort level.

I'd hope people get a little less connected and a little more chatty in the year 2010. Even this blog itself is a detriment to getting out and meeting people. (That's why I blog less and less and am probably going to cease sometime this year.)

Have a great day all. Get out and embrace the people in your world. Live large! Don't let technology rule you. Go say hi and joke with a few strangers today for no reason at all. You'll be surprised at how good you feel.

Buh-Bye.
